General Information

  • Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to insure enough time for skate fitting and attendance.
  • Most Classes are 45 minutes in length – 30 minutes of lesson and 15 minutes of practice time (Tot classes are 30 minutes).
  • 8 week session - Cost: $75
  • 4-week session - Cost: $39
  • Summer Classes - $9
  • Fee includes lessons and two public skating passes which are provided as a means of additional practice or if the skater should miss a class. (Applies to Sessions I-IV only)
  • Make-up lessons are allowed only if there is space available in an appropriate class. Sessions are not prorated at time of registration. (Applies to Sessions I-IV only)
  • Classes will be divided by skating skill levels. When attendance is low, similar level classes will be combined.
  • A minimum of 6 participants is required to conduct a class and a maximum of 20 participants will be allowed per class.
  • Skate rental is included in the registration fee.
  • Skate rental is available on a first come, first served basis as there are a limited number of skates in each size.
  • Dress warmly, it is cool on the ice. Gloves are required for Tots.
  • Refunds are given for medical reasons only. Inclement weather does not apply unless the University is closed.
  • The Goggin Ice Center conducts 5 sessions of Group Skating Lessons per year. Skate Often!

Instructional Ice Skating

ISI - The Ice Skating Institute

USFS - United States Figure Skating

The Goggin Ice Center offers a complete recreational skating program with classes for all ages and abilities. Weekly lessons are taught by highly qualified professional instructors. The Arena program incorporate guidelines of the Ice Skating Institute (ISI) and United States Figure Skating (USFS) for recreational skating and testing. Our concept ensures enjoyable and relaxing skating, while providing a complete approach to mastering the skills of skating. Levels designated by classes are Tots, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple and Freestyle. Specialty classes are also offered each session, which may include classes such as Hockey Skating Skills, Footwork, Low Freestyle, Moves in the Field, Intro to Synchronized Skating, Basic Jump & Spin, etc. Participation in the annual February ISI competition and spring ice show is also offered to all group lesson participants.

TOTS I, II, III, IV (ages 3-5)

Instruction with learning to fall and recover correctly. Balance and self confidence are stressed. A beginner who has never skated belongs in TOT I.

RED

For those 6 and older who have never skated before. Correct falling and recovery, skating posture and balance are taught.

ORANGE

For the skater who has completed Tot IV or the RED LEVEL. 1 and 2 foot glide, forward and backward swizzles, backward wiggles are taught.

YELLOW

For a skater who has passed the ORANGE LEVEL. Forward crossovers (left & right), forward stroking, snow plow stops are taught.

GREEN

For a skater who has passed the YELLOW LEVEL.  Backward skating, backward crossovers (right & left), and T-stops are taught.

BLUE

For a skater who has passed the GREEN LEVEL. Mohawks (left & right), outside 3 turns, hockey stops and beginning waltz jumps are taught.

PURPLE

For the skater who has passed the BLUE LEVEL. Inside 3 turns, forward outside and inside edges, lunge, shoot the duck, and bunny hops are taught

SPECIALTY CLASSES
(Classes offered intermittently)

LOW FREESTYLE

For the skater who has passed the PURPLE LEVEL.  Basic jump and spin techniques are addressed.

ADULT

Adults only. Adult I is for the beginner. Adult II is for the skater with some basic knowledge of skating. Adult III is for the skater who has mastered the fundamentals.

TEEN I, II, III

Ages 12-18 only. Teen I is for the beginner. Teen II is for the skater with basic skating knowledge. Teen III is for the skater who has mastered the fundamentals.

INTRO TO SYNCHRONIZED SKATING

Designed for the skater (Yellow level and above) who is interested in learning or developing the basics of synchronized skating (skating in a group). The fundamentals of synchro skating will be addressed, such as wheels, blocks, lines, circles, etc!

FOOTWORK

For the Blue level skater and above. Developmental footwork patterns will be taught.

PARENT AND CHILD

Designed for the parent and toddler in preparation for group lessons. Games and creative play are the main focus.

JUMP & SPIN

Learn the basics of jumping and spinning in this class designed for skaters in the Yellow Level or above.  This is a great introduction into Free Style and teaches skills that may be used by skaters in the ISI 2009 Miami Open Skating Competition or Annual Spring Ice Show!

HOCKEY SKATING SKILLS

Designed for the hockey player at the yellow level and above. Basic skating skills will be covered and incorporated into hockey-related drills. This is a great class to compliment Goggin's hockey programs!

INTRO TO MOVES IN THE FIELD

For the skater who has passed the yellow level. Moves in the Field is a discipline within figure skating which incorporates foundational skating skills into specifically designed patterns. This class is designed for the skater interested in beginning Moves in the Field or getting extra instruction on their Pre-Preliminary or Preliminary tests.
